Portland Castle

Portland Castle is one of Henry VIII’s finest coastal artillery forts, built in 1539-40 as part of a defensive chain protecting England from French and Spanish invasion. This remarkably well-preserved Tudor fortress retains its original layout, gun platforms, living quarters, and defensive features, providing exceptional insights into 16th-century military architecture. The castle’s strategic position on Portland Harbor controlled the vital anchorage and remains in use by the Royal Navy today. Visitors can explore the gun deck, Great Hall, governor’s lodgings, Tudor kitchen, garrison rooms, and learn about the castle’s 480-year military history through engaging exhibitions. The castle saw action during the Civil War and World Wars, with displays explaining its evolving defensive role. Costumed interpreters and living history events bring the past to life. The castle gardens overlooking Portland Harbor provide peaceful picnic spots with harbor views. Portland Castle combines architectural excellence, military history, and stunning coastal location. Managed by English Heritage with excellent facilities.
