Tyneham is Dorset’s hauntingly beautiful ‘lost village’ where time stopped in December 1943. This unique WWII ghost village was evacuated when 225 residents were asked to leave temporarily for military training, but they never returned. Today, Tyneham stands as a poignant memorial to a vanished way of life, with ruined cottages, a preserved schoolroom frozen in time with 1940s lessons still on the blackboard, and St Mary’s Church containing moving exhibitions about the villagers’ stories. The surrounding landscape offers spectacular coastal walks to Worbarrow Bay, dramatic clifftop views, and a tangible sense of history. Access is restricted to weekends and public holidays when the MOD ranges are not in use, adding to its mystique and making each visit feel like a privileged glimpse into the past.
