The Nine Stones is an intimate and atmospheric Bronze Age stone circle situated in a peaceful woodland setting near Winterbourne Abbas. Despite its name, the circle currently contains only nine upright stones (there may have originally been more), arranged in a ring approximately 26 feet in diameter. These weathered grey sarsen stones create a mystical atmosphere, particularly enchanting when dappled sunlight filters through the surrounding trees. The circle dates from around 3,000-4,000 years ago and was likely used for ritual and ceremonial purposes. Unlike larger stone circles, Nine Stones offers a more personal, contemplative experience where visitors can easily imagine ancient ceremonies. The site is managed by English Heritage and is freely accessible via a short walk from a lay-by on the A35. The combination of ancient stones and natural woodland creates a uniquely magical atmosphere that feels worlds away from the nearby main road.
