Gold Hill Museum brings the fascinating history of Shaftesbury and the surrounding area to life through engaging exhibitions, archaeological finds, and local artifacts. Housed in historic buildings on the famous Gold Hill (featured in the iconic Hovis bread advertisement), the museum offers stunning views and intimate insights into this ancient hilltop town founded by King Alfred the Great in 880 AD. Collections include Anglo-Saxon treasures, medieval artifacts from Shaftesbury Abbey, Victorian domestic items, local crafts and industries, and the story of Shaftesbury’s importance as a major pilgrimage destination. Interactive displays and hands-on exhibits make history accessible for all ages. The museum’s garden features a replica of the Byzant, a ceremonial platform unique to Shaftesbury. Knowledgeable volunteers share local stories and answer questions. Special exhibitions change regularly, covering topics from archaeology to local social history.
