The Red House Museum & Gardens is Christchurch’s award-winning local history museum and art gallery, housed in a magnificent red-brick Georgian workhouse building surrounded by beautiful gardens. The museum brings local history alive through interactive displays, archaeological treasures, costume galleries, and fascinating exhibits covering Christchurch’s rich heritage from prehistoric times to the present. Highlights include Saxon and Norman artifacts, a reconstruction Victorian ironmonger’s shop, Edwardian pharmacy, costume collections spanning centuries, local industries including smuggling and salmon fishing, and an excellent archaeology collection. The art gallery hosts changing contemporary exhibitions. The stunning gardens feature herbaceous borders, a sensory garden, sculpture trail, and peaceful green spaces perfect for picnics. Special events include craft fairs, historical reenactments, and children’s activities. Best of all, entry is completely free.
