Sherborne Abbey is a magnificent Saxon and medieval church showcasing exceptional fan vaulting, Saxon heritage, and 1,300 years of continuous worship. Founded in 705 AD as cathedral and monastery by St Aldhelm, this glorious building features superb late Perpendicular Gothic architecture with some of England’s finest fan vaulted ceilings creating breathtaking visual impact. The nave ceiling from around 1490 demonstrates medieval craftsmanship at its peak. Saxon foundations and Norman elements combine with later Gothic additions creating architectural layers. The Abbey contains fascinating historical monuments, medieval tiles, beautiful stained glass including modern windows by John Piper, and impressive organ. The building survived Dissolution of Monasteries by being purchased by townspeople in 1540. Regular services, concerts, and community events maintain living tradition. The Abbey’s architectural splendor, historical significance, and beautiful setting in Sherborne’s historic core make it essential visiting. Free entry allows appreciation of this exceptional building.
