Blandford Forum Georgian Town

Blandford Forum is one of Britain’s finest complete Georgian market towns, rebuilt by local architects John and William Bastard after a devastating fire destroyed the town in 1731. This architectural gem showcases elegant 18th-century town planning, with beautifully proportioned buildings in mellow brick and Portland stone creating harmonious streetscapes. The Market Place features the magnificent Church of St Peter and St Paul – a masterpiece of Georgian ecclesiastical architecture with soaring spire, elegant interior, and elaborate plasterwork. The Town Hall, Corn Exchange, and countless Georgian townhouses demonstrate the Bastard brothers’ architectural vision. Information plaques throughout town explain the 1731 fire and reconstruction. The Blandford Museum tells local history including the fire, architecture, and lace-making heritage. Independent shops, cafes, and twice-weekly markets maintain traditional market town character. Blandford offers architectural enthusiasts an exceptional example of Georgian town planning, while retaining vibrant community life. The town’s completeness and authenticity make it architecturally significant.
