The Blue Pool is one of Dorset’s most enchanting natural attractions – a former clay pit transformed into a stunning turquoise lake surrounded by heathland and woodland. The pool’s remarkable blue color changes with the seasons, weather, and light, shifting from vivid turquoise to deep green as clay particles reflect sunlight. Circular walks through the 25-acre reserve wind through pine forest, past smaller pools, across heathland supporting rare wildlife including sand lizards, smooth snakes, and Dartford warblers, and alongside bog gardens. The visitor center explains the area’s geology and ecology. Tea rooms overlook the pool, and a museum displays local minerals, fossils, and clay-mining heritage. The tranquil, other-worldly atmosphere makes it feel like a hidden oasis. Spring brings rhododendrons and azaleas in bloom, while autumn colors are spectacular. Perfect for families, photographers, and nature lovers.
