Clavell Tower is an iconic and romantic landmark perched dramatically on the clifftop near Kimmeridge Bay. This striking circular tower was built in 1830 by Reverend John Richards Clavell as a folly and coastal observatory. The tower featured in P.D. James’s novel ‘The Black Tower’ and has become one of Dorset’s most photographed structures. In 2008, the National Trust undertook the remarkable engineering feat of dismantling and rebuilding the tower 25 meters inland to save it from coastal erosion. The four-story tower can be rented as unique National Trust holiday accommodation, offering 360-degree views from Weymouth to the Isle of Wight. Even when not staying, the tower’s exterior and clifftop location make it a spectacular destination for coastal walks. The combination of dramatic architecture, coastal views, literary connections, and engineering triumph creates a truly special landmark.
