Hengistbury Head is a dramatic headland jutting into the English Channel, offering spectacular views, important archaeology, diverse wildlife, and beautiful beaches. This prominent 35-meter headland has been occupied for over 12,000 years, with evidence of Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Roman settlement. It was a major Iron Age port trading with Europe. Today the headland features a visitor center explaining its rich history, archaeology, and ecology. Two stunning beaches flank the head – the calm harbor side perfect for families, and the dramatic Mudeford Sandbank ocean beach. Nature reserves support rare birds, butterflies, and wildflowers on heathland, saltmarsh, and coastal habitats. Walking trails wind across the headland with panoramic views of the Needles, Christchurch Harbour, and Bournemouth. The historic land train takes less mobile visitors to the head. Fossil hunting, kite flying, and wildlife watching are popular activities. The combination of history, nature, views, and beaches makes Hengistbury Head exceptionally diverse.
