Hod Hill is a spectacular Iron Age hill fort near Blandford Forum featuring massive earthwork ramparts enclosing 54 acres atop a commanding hilltop. The fort dates from around 250 BC and was occupied until the Roman conquest in 43 AD when Roman forces attacked and built their own fort in one corner. The site demonstrates both Iron Age defensive architecture and Roman military strategy. Visitors can walk the ramparts enjoying panoramic views across the Stour Valley while exploring the best-preserved Romano-British fort earthworks in Britain. Archaeological excavations revealed Iron Age roundhouses, Roman barrack blocks, and evidence of the violent conquest. Managed by the National Trust with free access, Hod Hill offers historical significance, archaeological interest, excellent walking, and stunning countryside views. The combination of prehistoric, Roman, and natural beauty makes this essential for anyone interested in ancient Britain. The peaceful setting belies the site’s dramatic military history.
