The Conduit

The Conduit is a distinctive hexagonal structure standing in Cheap Street, Sherborne, dating from the 16th century. Originally built to house the terminal basin of a water supply system that brought fresh water to Sherborne Abbey, it served the community for centuries. This ornate stone monument features elaborate carvings and stands as a reminder of medieval engineering and the importance of clean water supplies to historic towns. The Conduit was relocated from the Abbey grounds to its current prominent position in Cheap Street. Today it remains a beloved landmark and meeting point in Sherborne’s town centre, representing both practical medieval infrastructure and decorative civic pride.
